About Professor Pringle:

Catherine has been at the University of Georgia’s Institute of Ecology  (now the Odum School of Ecology) since 1993, where she serves as Chair of the Conservation Ecology Graduate Program Steering Committee.

Professional Experience and Education:

  • Distinguished Research Professor, Odum School of Ecology, UGA, 2008-present
  • Professor, Odum School of Ecology, The University of Georgia (UGA), 2000-present
  • Associate Professor, Institute of Ecology, UGA, 1996-2000
  • Assistant Professor, Institute of Ecology, UGA, 1993-96
  • Adjunct Assistant Professor, Cornell University, 1990-92
  • Postdoctoral Fellow, University of California at Berkeley and Santa Barbara, 1986-89
  • Ph.D.  (Aquatic Biology): The University of Michigan, 1986
  • Visiting Scholar: The University of California, Berkeley, 1983-86
  • M.S. (Resource Ecology): The University of Michigan, 1979
  • B.S. (Botany Honors Program) The University of Michigan, 1976

Research Interests:

I am an ecosystem scientist with a primary emphasis on freshwater ecology and conservation biology. My research examines species-community-ecosystem linkages, with a focus on effects of species loss on ecosystem structure and function.

Other research areas include landscape ecology, patch dynamics and hydrologic connectivity. Changes in stream solute chemistry, which have emerged from our long-term data set in lowland Costa Rica, have led to a more recent focus on climate change effects on stream ecosystems and cascading ecological effects. Our long-term research projects in Costa Rica and Puerto Rico have been effective in linking scientific research with resource management and environmental outreach. I also have ongoing projects in Georgia, North Carolina, Panama, and Trinidad - all of which are detailed under Current Research in sidebar.

Graduate Student Mentorship:

Graduate training is a major focus of my laboratory, with 34 students who have completed (or are in the process of completing) advanced degrees with me since 1993.  I welcome inquiries about graduate opportunities in my lab and encourage prospective students to look at our current research projects (above).  I enjoy working with graduate students and feel that a collegial and interactive group of graduate students is essential to running an effective research program.
